Well shit

Over my 4 day winter staycation the head gaskets in my car went out.  So I have a few options

  • Pay $2200 to have a shop replace them
  • Replace them myself (again, finding someone to mill the heads)
  • Put a used engine in it
  • Roll the loan balance into a new loan and get a new car

At this point I am leaning towards the used engine, and getting rid of it after tax time.  I really don’t want to end up paying way more for a car than I should for option 4 anymore.  Option 1 is just to damned expensive and option 2 has the chance of a mistake or picking a bad machine shop 🙁

Wife and I subscribed to Disney+ yesterday. For the kiddos of course…..

So today I plan to start watching the Marvel movies in chronological order. I’ll use strikethrough when I’m done watching one.

  • Captain Marvel (takes place in 1995)
  • Iron Man (takes place in 2010)
  • Iron Man 2 (takes place after Iron Man)
  • The Incredible Hulk (time unspecified, pre-Avengers)
  • Thor (time unspecified, pre-Avengers)
  • The Avengers (takes place in 2012)
  • Iron Man 3 (takes place six months after The Avengers)
  • Thor: Dark World (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (sometime in 2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (after Guardians)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (takes place in 2015)
  • Ant-Man (takes place in 2015)
  • Captain America: Civil War (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (post-Civil War, pre-Infinity War)
  • Doctor Strange (takes place in 2016)
  • Black Panther (takes place in 2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (takes place in 2017)
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp (ambiguous, but fits nicely between IW and Endgame)
  • Avengers: Endgame (starts in 2017, finishes in 2022)
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (post-Endgame)

Support Us page

Well, I finally figured out what caused the issue on the support us page. It was a plugin I used to set the content security policy headers. Couldn’t white list Amazon. Plug is no longer in use.

Well crap

Over the weekend the PSU in my desktop at home decided to shit itself.  In doing so, it started to burn/melt the 4 pin CPU connector on the board.  Now running a Pentium Dual Core E5200 at home just so I can print and check email.  It isn’t fast enough to actually handle connecting to the VPN at work so I’ll have to use the spare sales laptop for now Sad smile

Home server blues

Well,

I am giving up on the KCMA-D8 boards.  Returned the last one and I will be getting an Inventec B800GF0.  Will take more RAM, has 10G networking, and uses Xeons instead of Opterons.  Cheaper too.  Of course it will have its own issues, but what doesn’t anymore?

Home server update

Just a quick update on my home server.  I finally got a chance to try out the replacement KCMA-D8 board I got.  Sadly it does not have working video.  Thankfully the seller is shipping me another one.  I also talked to my wife and she agrees that we can mount it on the wall in the mechanical room to reduce the temperature in the crawlspace under the stairs.  While not an ideal location, it is better than where it sites now since the mechanical room is always open (litter boxes for the cats).  I am hoping it won’t get too hot in there in the winter with the server, the water heater & the furnace in there.

Temperature & Humidity Sensors

I’m planning on starting to make some 433MHz temperature & humidity sensors based on this Instructable.  I will also have to build a programmer, based on this Instructable.

Parts list for the programmer (Amazon works best for me) is as follows.

  • 10 Pin to Standard 6 Pin Adapter Board + USBASP USBISP AVR Programmer USB ATMEGA8 ATMEGA128 ATtiny/CAN/PWM for Arduino
  • AmazonBasics USB 2.0 Extension Cable – A-Male to A-Female Adapter Cord – 6.5 Feet (2 Meters)
  • Willwin 2pcs Pluggable Development Board for ATtiny13A/ATtiny25/ATtiny45/ATtiny85 Programming Editor Micro USB Power Connector

The parts list for the sensors is as follows

  • Original ATMEL DIP-8 ATTINY85-20PU Tiny85-20PU IC Chip Pack of 10pcs
  • Uxcell a15080400ux1059 Solder Type Double Row 8PIN DIP Integrated Circuit IC Sockets Connector 15 Pieces
  • HiLetgo 2pcs DHT22/AM2302 Digital Temperature And Humidity Sensor Module Temperature Humidity Monitor Sensor Replace SHT11 SHT15 for Arduino Electronic Practice DIY (Drop in replacement for the DHT11 in the Instructable but with a better temperature & humidity range)
  • 10pcs H34A-433 433Mhz Mini RF Wireless Transmitter Module Minimum Remote Control Module Ask 2.6-12V
  • WAYLLSHINE 5PCS ON/OFF Switch With Cover 4x 1.5V AA Battery Holder Battery Case Battery Box with 5.5″ Black Red Wire Leads
  • DAOKI 10pcs 433MHz antenna Helical Spiral Spring Remote Control for Arduino Raspberry 5mm

As you can see, I made some substitutes to work with what I can find on Amazon but for the most part it is the same component.s

Home server

Well,

Last night I moved my home server from an old crappy tower case to a Rosewill RSV-L4500 4U rackmount case.  No rack to put it in so it sits on its side but oh well.  So much room in it, plenty of room for my ASUS KCMA-D8 motherboard.  Will be really nice when I get the replacement board so I can use both CPU sockets and have 16 true cores and hopefully 128GB of RAM.  If not, I’ll have either 64GB (like I do now) or 96GB of RAM.  Both of which are a huge improvement over the 24GB I had before.

funtoo Linux

I’ve decided that I really have no reason to have Windows on my laptop since I don’t use it all that often so tonight I’m going to embark on installing funtoo Linux on it.  It will most definitely be an interesting time but given the age of my laptop shouldn’t have to many surprises.
