More Car Stuff

I just got a Roav SmartCharge F2 for my car since a mounting kit for the Bluetooth stereo I have is a nice $200 (damn Driver Information Center built into the factory radio).  Although not perfect, it does work and at least in my car people can hear me fine talking over it so that is nice.  The main complaint I have is that the audio quality isn’t perfect, but it does fine for what I need so I’m happy with it.

Pandemic

So, when it comes to the Coronavirus Pandemic there are only two things that scare/worry me right now.  The are me getting it and passing it on to my youngest as he has immune system issues due to getting RSV at 5 weeks old and the other (and bigger concern to me) is how as a country we are responding to this.  I mean, we have 4 rolls of TP left at home and we cannot find any to buy, anywhere Sad smile

Car & Stuff

Well,

I bought a 2007 Pontiac G6 GT to replace the Impreza.  It isn’t perfect, but it doesn’t have leaking head gaskets so that is a plus.  The boys love the sunroof too.

I have embarked on a task to reduce the amount of space used on the home server.  To do this I am taking all movies & TV shows stored on it that are above a certain size (not sure the cutoff yet) and re-encoding them to H265 files using the video card on my desktop.  So far I’ve saved at least 1TB of space.  It will make backing up my server much easier on my crappy connection.

Well shit

Over my 4 day winter staycation the head gaskets in my car went out.  So I have a few options

  • Pay $2200 to have a shop replace them
  • Replace them myself (again, finding someone to mill the heads)
  • Put a used engine in it
  • Roll the loan balance into a new loan and get a new car

At this point I am leaning towards the used engine, and getting rid of it after tax time.  I really don’t want to end up paying way more for a car than I should for option 4 anymore.  Option 1 is just to damned expensive and option 2 has the chance of a mistake or picking a bad machine shop 🙁

  • Iron Man 2 (takes place after Iron Man)
  • The Incredible Hulk (time unspecified, pre-Avengers)
  • Thor (time unspecified, pre-Avengers)
  • The Avengers (takes place in 2012)
  • Iron Man 3 (takes place six months after The Avengers)
  • Thor: Dark World (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (sometime in 2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (after Guardians)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (takes place in 2015)
  • Ant-Man (takes place in 2015)
  • Captain America: Civil War (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (post-Civil War, pre-Infinity War)

Support Us page

Well, I finally figured out what caused the issue on the support us page. It was a plugin I used to set the content security policy headers. Couldn’t white list Amazon. Plug is no longer in use.

Well crap

Over the weekend the PSU in my desktop at home decided to shit itself.  In doing so, it started to burn/melt the 4 pin CPU connector on the board.  Now running a Pentium Dual Core E5200 at home just so I can print and check email.  It isn’t fast enough to actually handle connecting to the VPN at work so I’ll have to use the spare sales laptop for now Sad smile

Home server blues

Well,

I am giving up on the KCMA-D8 boards.  Returned the last one and I will be getting an Inventec B800GF0.  Will take more RAM, has 10G networking, and uses Xeons instead of Opterons.  Cheaper too.  Of course it will have its own issues, but what doesn’t anymore?

Home server update

Just a quick update on my home server.  I finally got a chance to try out the replacement KCMA-D8 board I got.  Sadly it does not have working video.  Thankfully the seller is shipping me another one.  I also talked to my wife and she agrees that we can mount it on the wall in the mechanical room to reduce the temperature in the crawlspace under the stairs.  While not an ideal location, it is better than where it sites now since the mechanical room is always open (litter boxes for the cats).  I am hoping it won’t get too hot in there in the winter with the server, the water heater & the furnace in there.
